Masugata Encampment, OTO, was formally chartered at the Summer Solstice of Anno IVxii (2004 e.v.). We are based in the Valley of Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan; a region rich in history, diverse in geography, and home to some of this nation's most sacred sites, temples, and shrines.
The letters OTO stand for Ordo Templi Orientis, the Order of Oriental Templars, or Order of the Temple of the East. The OTO is dedicated to the high purpose of securing the Liberty of the Individual and his or her advancement in Light, Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge, and Power through Beauty, Courage, and Wit, on the Foundation of Universal Brotherhood.
The name of our OTO body has much significance and many different meanings. However, the word masugata is primarily a military construction and engineering term. It refers to the doubled walled, right angle battlement incorporated into fortification designs and roads leading into many Japanese cities, castles and mountain citadels. In ancient times, the masugata design and technique was also employed by mages for esoteric defense and to ward off regressive forces. It was a kind of magick, and it still is.
Besides its marshal definition, masugata also has a very festive meaning behind it. The word roughly transliterates as "in the shape of a cube-shaped box." Small, square wooden masu cups are a regular feature at important celebrations and feasts in Japan, especially those of a religious nature. And feasts are an important part of the Thelemic way of life.
The mission of Masugata Encampment is to establish and maintain a permanent, productive and prosperous community here in Japan, dedicated to furthering the Thelemic magickal current, philosophy and social culture, while employing the OTO principles of Peace, Tolerance and Truth. We hold classes and workshops (some of which are open to non-members) in magick and occult studies, offer initiation into the Order, celebrate the change of the seasons and other Thelemic holidays, and provide a fraternal environment for our members so that they can discover and explore their own True Will.
